All good things must come to an end, especially when passing fads collide with the harsh reality of nature. Sad news has just arrived for otaku tourism, as the permanent closure of Minobu Shizen no Sato, the real-life location that served as the primary model for the acclaimed Yuru Camp (Laid-Back Camp) movie, has been officially announced. Located in Yamanashi Prefecture, this destination will cease operations entirely at the end of this month following a drastic drop in popularity.

The end of an era and the danger of bears

Four years ago, when the film hit theaters, this place became a true sanctuary for the fandom, who crowded the facilities to feel as if they were inside the story. However, the management company revealed that the number of visitors has dropped to less than 40 percent compared to its golden age. The reasons? The massive camping boom that emerged after the pandemic has almost completely vanished. Added to this is the constant and terrifying appearance of wild bears in the area, which scared away casual tourists, and the fact that the local population is aging, making the maintenance of the site's water system unsustainable.

The harsh difference between anime and real life

Minobu town officials expressed their deep disappointment, as they had high hopes that the movie effect would boost the region's economy for much longer. In Japanese forums, the community pointed out that the reality of hiking is very different from what we see on screen. Dealing with hellish road traffic, facing insects, the high cost of equipment, and the real danger of encountering wild animals proved that enjoying nature requires much more effort than just sitting down to watch our favorite campers.

Knowing that many tourist destinations survive only a few years on the success of their animated adaptations, do you think fans simply lost interest in camping, or was the threat of bears the final nail in the coffin for this place?
