Taking fandom to the civil registry is a permanent decision that will affect a third party for life. This March 2026, social media confirmed that a couple from Indonesia decided to mark the life of their first child using the hit fantasy manga written by Kanehito Yamada and illustrated by Tsukasa Abe, Sousou no Frieren. The parents bypassed traditional local names to christen the newborn after the work's male protagonist.

A hero on the birth certificate

The baby came into the world late last year. The parents, identified as Bagus Imam Ramlan and Salsyabilla, legally registered him under the name Himmel Imam Basalamah. The base German word means sky or heaven. Within the narrative of the Japanese franchise, this character is the brave human leader who managed to defeat the Demon King. Photographs of the official birth certificate began circulating in otaku forums until they went completely viral this week.

The civil registry fills up with characters

This strange naming trend is not an isolated case within the Asian country. Recently, another Indonesian family registered a girl under the exact name of the elf protagonist of this same story, Frieren. The reader community is now constantly joking about the high probability that these two children will share a classroom and end up crossing paths in the future during their real school years.

Considering the cruel bullying that children often suffer for having unusual names, would you dare to legally register your child with the name of your favorite anime character?
