Lollipop Chainsaw Live-Action Movie Announced Alongside New Game Sequel

Lollipop Chainsaw is back in a big way, like a neon blade cutting through a dark arcade. During Tokyo Game Show, the franchise confirmed two major steps forward: a live-action film and a brand-new game, Lollipop Chainsaw 2 Back2Back. If you have followed this series for years, this moment feels like opening an old locker and finding it full of noise, blood, and glitter.

A live-action film is now in the works

The new project presentation revealed that Lollipop Chainsaw is getting a film adaptation. The movie will be produced by Kirk Shaw and Robert Franke, with Joe Teng also attached to the project. Later details added Takafumi Yūki and Patricio Rabuffetti as producers as well.

The plan is clear: this will be a live-action Hollywood film created for a worldwide audience. It was also explained that this movie is separate from the anime project announced before, so the franchise is moving in more than one direction at the same time.

Another important detail is its tone. The film is being described as an R-rated action comedy, and the story will take place before the events of the original game.

The sequel game arrives in 2027

At the same event, Nada Holdings and Dragami Games announced Lollipop Chainsaw 2 Back2Back for PlayStation 5 in 2027. That news hit with force. For many players, this is the return they had been waiting for.

The sequel has some notable names behind it:

• Hajime Tabata is directing the game.
• Development is being handled by his company, JP Universe.
• Masahiro Yuki, writer of the original game, is writing the story.
• Original character designer NekoshowguN is also involved.

That mix gives the sequel a thread back to its roots. Sometimes a comeback can feel hollow, but here the connection to the original creative side still matters.

The anime project still exists

Back in July 2025, Nada Holdings had already shared that its partnership with Dragami Games would include both a new game and an anime adaptation. Now, with the film announced separately, the franchise looks wider than ever.

There was also a statement at that time saying the new game would avoid what the company called excessive creative restrictions connected to DEI. However, no exact explanation was given about how that approach would appear in the final product.

A franchise with a long road behind it

The original Lollipop Chainsaw launched in June 2012 for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. It was developed by Grasshopper Manufacture and published by Kadokawa Games and Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment.

The game stood out because it brought together Gōichi Suda, known as Suda51, and filmmaker James Gunn. That collaboration gave the title its wild pulse, like mixing a horror movie with bubblegum color and a chainsaw scream.

How the series reached this point

In July 2022, Yoshimi Yasuda said that Dragami Games had purchased the IP from Kadokawa Games after the franchise had been left in uncertain shape. He also said that Warner Bros. was supporting that effort.

Before that, in May 2022, Kadokawa Games moved part of its business into the new company Dragami Games. Yasuda and Satoshi Fuyuno established the company that same month. Step by step, the series found a new home.

RePOP helped keep the chainsaw running

The remaster, Lollipop Chainsaw RePOP, launched digitally in the Americas and Europe in September 2024 for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Switch, and PC via Steam. Later, the Switch 2 version arrived on May 28 this year.

That release kept the franchise breathing while bigger plans were taking shape. I know that feeling well from growing up in México with one foot in Korean memory and the other in game shops full of old covers; sometimes a remaster is not just a re-release, it is a signal.
