A new fantasy anime is on the way, and it arrives with that sharp feeling of danger that stays under your skin. WHITE FOX confirmed a television anime adaptation of How I Became King by Eating Monsters (Monster no Niku wo Kutteitara Ōi ni Tsuita Ken), with its premiere set for 2027. When I first read the premise, it felt like stepping into a dark forest at dusk in Korea stories my family used to tell, but with that wild, messy energy you also feel so much in fantasy anime.

The series follows a prince whose survival depends on something brutal and strange: eating monsters. It is a story that does not walk softly. It bites.

The story begins with a boy surrounded by death

The heart of this series is Mars, the first prince of the kingdom of Farune. He is only 12 years old, but his life is already wrapped in fear. Assassination is not a distant threat for him. It sits at the table with every meal.

To escape poison hidden in palace food, Mars leaves the castle and heads into a forest filled with monsters. There, he hunts to survive, fighting hunger with his own hands. That image hits hard: a child prince trading silver plates for blood and mud.

One night, while searching for more monster meat, Mars meets a red-haired woman carrying a greatsword. She tells him he has promise and orders him to become her apprentice. From there, the truth opens like a crack in stone: eating monsters makes you stronger.

That power becomes the spark for something much larger. Mars is not only trying to survive attempts on his life anymore. He is pulled into wars, schemes, and conflicts that spread across the kingdom and beyond.

Light novel and manga details

The original story comes from Daken, who launched it on Shōsetsuka ni Narō in January 2022. The latest web novel update came in January 2023.

Later, Micro Magazine began releasing the series in print through its GCN Bunko label in September 2023, featuring illustrations by Shiba. The seventh volume is scheduled for October 20.

For English readers, Cross Infinite World is releasing the original light novels, and the sixth digital volume came out on September 30.

The manga adaptation by Karin Suzuragi started in January 2024 in Young Animal Zero. Its third compiled volume is set for October 29.

A growing name in fantasy adaptations

Daken is building a stronger presence in anime and light novels. Another one of the author’s works, Tsuihо̄ Sareta Shо̄nin wa Kin no Chikara de Sekai wo Sukū, is also planned for a television anime adaptation.

There is also more of Daken’s work available in English:

  • The Suspects of Necromancy
  • The Wicked Princess and Her Twelve Eyes
  • Who Killed the Hero?

That matters because it shows this is not a one-shot name appearing out of nowhere. There is already a path behind it, and now Monster no Niku wo Kutteitara Ōi ni Tsuita Ken takes the next step.

What to watch from here

For now, the biggest points are clear:

  • Anime studio: WHITE FOX
  • Format: TV anime
  • Premiere: 2027
  • Original author: Daken
  • Light novel illustrator: Shiba
  • Manga artist: Karin Suzuragi

The announcement also arrived alongside celebratory illustrations from Shiba and Karin Suzuragi, a small detail that gives the reveal a warm pulse. You can feel the series stretching from page to screen little by little, like a blade being drawn.

If you follow dark fantasy, rising-king stories, or dangerous survival setups, keep this one close. Watch for more updates on the 2027 anime debut, because this prince’s road does not look gentle at all.
