Being the backbone of an adventuring party rarely grants you glory, but being kicked out for doing your job too well borders on the ridiculous. Fortunately, real talent always finds its way to the top. This Friday, an official website was launched to announce the anime adaptation of the fantasy light novel written by Haka Tokura and illustrated by Eiri Shirai, Magical Buffs: The Support Caster Is Stronger Than He Realized! (Zatsuyou Fuyo Jutsushi ga Jibun no Saikyou ni Kizuku made). The production committee celebrated the news by confirming that the series will begin its broadcast on Japanese television this coming January.

The overall production of this epic redemption story was placed in the experienced hands of studio J.C. Staff. The project's main direction belongs to Hideki Okamoto, an industry veteran. The scripts will be under the structural supervision of Takao Yoshioka, ensuring a proper pace for the protagonist's evolution. The original character designs will be adapted for animation by designer Yu Murakami. In the sound department, Yoshikazu Iwanami will take over as audio director, backed by the monumental scores of acclaimed composer Yuki Hayashi, world-famous for his work on giants such as Haikyu!! and My Hero Academia.

The initial announcement was accompanied by the reveal of the lead duo that will head the main voice cast of the series:

  • Reiji Kawashima as Wim Strauss.

A rising actor recognized by the otaku community after portraying the immortal Fushi in the acclaimed fantasy drama To Your Eternity and Finn Ames in Mashle.

  • Hana Hishikawa as Heidemarie.

A young emerging talent who continues to consolidate her career following her brilliant leading role as Yui Nagomi in Delicious Party Precure.

About the work

Haka Tokura began publishing the original drafts of this narrative through the independent web portal Shosetsuka ni Naro in November 2020. His fresh take on the figure of the magic support caught the attention of publisher Futabasha, who began publishing the story in physical format with color illustrations. Its undeniable commercial success will allow it to release its eleventh compiled volume this coming April 30th. The franchise also features a faithful manga adaptation that began its uninterrupted serialization in September 2021.

Synopsis of Magical Buffs: The Support Caster Is Stronger Than He Realized!

The plot closely follows Wim Strauss, a young and undervalued support sorcerer specialized in applying magical enhancements (buffs) during dungeon raids. His spells are so incredibly efficient and increase his companions' statistics so much that they end up severely wounding the fragile pride of his group leader, who decides to expel him in an unfair and humiliating manner. Wim's luck changes radically when his childhood friend, Heidemarie, who has secretly observed the true potential of his magic for years, invites him to join Nachtlibelle, one of the most powerful and prestigious guilds in the entire kingdom. Surrounded by a new team of elite combatants who truly value his skills, Wim will finally have the opportunity to show the world how lethal a support sorcerer can truly be.

Do you think the trend of expelled protagonists proving their true worth will manage to stay fresh with this approach focused exclusively on support magic?
