Turning an absolute tragedy into a tool of relentless manipulation is a skill forged only in the darkest corners of society, and now that darkness is ready to claim its throne. The trend of villainesses who defy their fate is about to add one of its rawest and most successful stories. This Thursday, the publisher TO Books officially announced that the popular fantasy and revenge light novel series, The Condemned Villainess Goes Back in Time (Danzaisareta Akuyaku Reijo wa, Gyakko-shite Kanpeki na Akujo o Mezasu), will receive a television anime adaptation.

Although the announcement has made a huge impact among fans of the genre, the production committee has decided to keep specific details regarding the animation studio, the technical staff, or the voice cast (seiyuus) that will bring the protagonists to life under wraps. Similarly, the release window remains a mystery, although the first teasers and the official promotional poster are expected to be revealed in the coming months to satisfy the curiosity of a fanbase that has driven the work to exceed 2 million copies in circulation, including digital sales.

About the work

The mastermind behind this narrative is author Bakufu Narayama, who originally began publishing the story as a web novel on the Shosetsuka ni Naro site in November 2020. Its rapid popularity caught the attention of the publisher Kadokawa, starting the publication of printed volumes with elegant illustrations by Ebisushi in September 2021. The franchise is currently in a state of full expansion, with the release of its tenth novel volume and the eighth volume of its manga adaptation (illustrated by Rato Kitaguni) scheduled for April 1st. The work even transcended the page with a successful stage play premiered in 2025.

Synopsis of The Condemned Villainess Goes Back in Time

The story centers on Claudia, the despised daughter of a powerful duke who falls victim to a devastating betrayal by her evil half-sister. After being deceived and sold to a brothel, Claudia refuses to surrender to humiliation. Using her intelligence and cunning, she manages to become one of the most successful and powerful workers in her new environment, acquiring "street smarts" and seduction skills she never would have obtained in the academy. After dying at the peak of her career, Claudia inexplicably wakes up in the past, returning to when she was just 14 years old. Now, armed with the knowledge of her previous life and a will of steel, Claudia decides to abandon her role as a victim to become the perfect villainess. This time, there will be no mercy for those who try to trample her, and she will use every weapon at her disposal to protect her future and execute absolute revenge.

Considering that Claudia returns to the past with a life experience much rawer and more mature than any other conventional villainess, do you think her new "street-smart" attitude will be enough to dismantle the political conspiracies of her own family?
