Finding a moment of peace amidst a suffocating work routine is an invaluable treasure, and sometimes, that tranquility takes the form of a casual chat at the back of a store. The slice of life genre focused on adult life is about to welcome one of its greatest modern hits. This Friday, the official website for the anime adaptation of the acclaimed manga written and illustrated by Jinushi, Smoking Behind the Supermarket with You (Super no Ura de Yani Suu Futari), released a new video trailer. The material officially confirmed that the series will begin broadcasting on Japanese television during the upcoming July 2026 season and revealed the talents behind its production.

The subtle and comforting task of animating the protagonists' expressions of exhaustion and relief falls to the facilities of studio Asahi Production. The project's direction is split into a promising co-direction by Tadato Suzuki and Aoi Mori, who seek to maintain the melancholic yet warm atmosphere of the original work. The series composition and structuring are in the hands of Mio Inoue, while the character designs are being adapted for the screen by artist Yasuka Otaki. To complement the relaxing late-night chats, the original soundtrack is being composed by the duo of Shin Kono and Sayaka Aoki.

The trailer stood out especially for the confirmation of the top-tier artists who will be in charge of opening and closing each episode of this story:

  • ZUTOMAYO in charge of the Opening.

The enigmatic and popular musical project will lend its unmistakable style to perform the opening theme that will kick off the chapters.

  • imase in charge of the Ending.

The viral singer-songwriter will close each episode's evenings with the musical theme titled "Fiction," promising a perfect melody for unwinding.

About the work

The creator Jinushi originally began publishing this story in a web format, where its mature dialogue and relaxed tone made it an immediate viral phenomenon among adult audiences who identified with corporate fatigue. Its overwhelming popularity caught the attention of the publisher Square Enix, which began formally serializing the work in the pages of its Big Gangan magazine. Thanks to its endearing character dynamics, the work has managed to establish itself as one of the most-read adult romance manga today, making this animated adaptation one of the most anticipated premieres of the summer season.

Synopsis of Smoking Behind the Supermarket with You

The plot follows the grueling life of Sasaki, a corporately exhausted middle-aged office worker whose only ray of light at the end of the day is seeing the bright smile of Yamada, the kind cashier at the supermarket he frequents. One night, after a particularly hellish shift at the company, Sasaki arrives at the store only to find that his favorite cashier is no longer at her post. Disappointed and looking for a place to light a cigarette, he heads to the break area at the back of the establishment, where he crosses paths with Tayama, a mysterious young woman with a rebellious attitude and piercings who invites him to share the smoking area. What poor Sasaki completely ignores, in an act of hilarious deductive blindness, is that the free-spirited Tayama is actually the sweet cashier Yamada outside of her working hours. From that moment on, both will begin to share these secret smoking breaks, creating a healing bond between two people from different generations who are just looking to survive the daily grind.

With artists like ZUTOMAYO and imase in charge of the music, do you think the studio will manage to replicate that sense of nocturnal peace that the manga conveys during Sasaki and Tayama's chats?
