Production issues delay the second season of The Detective Is Already Dead
The mystery anime delays its return to television until October due to production problems.

Solving a murder requires time, patience, and a perfect collection of clues. Producing an animated series under the demanding standards of the Japanese industry requires exactly the same operational precision. This Sunday, it was confirmed via social media that the second season of the anime adaptation of the mystery light novel written by Nigoju and illustrated by Umibozu, The Detective Is Already Dead (Tantei wa Mo, Shindeiru), will suffer a setback in its schedule. The company Kadokawa explained that this move is a response to internal production issues, pushing the original premiere date scheduled for July until next October 2026.

The Detective Is Already Dead Details
Studio ENGI maintains full control over the animation of this sequel. Manabu Kurihara retains his position in the director's chair. The scripts remain under the strict supervision of Deko Akao, aiming to maintain narrative continuity. On a visual level, Yosuke Ito returns to handle character designs once again. The project's official account took advantage of the announcement to ratify the return of the main voice cast that voiced the protagonists during the first installment:
- Arata Nagai as Kimihiko Kimizuka.
An emerging talent within the industry who found his first major starring role in this protagonist.
- Saki Miyashita as Siesta.
Recognized among the otaku community for bringing Minoa Asagaya to life in the school comedy Anime-Gataris.
- Ayana Taketatsu as Nagisa Natsunagi.
A historical voice in Japanese dubbing, famous for portraying Nino Nakano in The Quintessential Quintuplets and Kirino Kosaka in Oreimo.
- Kanon Takao as Yui Saikawa.
Acclaimed for her role as Iris in the successful isekai comedy franchise Konosuba.
- Saho Shirasu as Charlotte Arisaka Anderson.
Actress recently known for lending her voice to Mio Kofune in the mystery thriller Summer Time Rendering.
About the work
Nigoju began publishing the original story through Kadokawa's MF Bunko J imprint in November 2019. The title quickly won the best newcomer award at the fifteenth edition of these literary awards. The franchise inspired a manga adaptation by artist Mugiko, published from May 2020 until officially concluding in October 2023. The anime first hit television in July 2021, starting with a massive one-hour special. Currently, the series also has a spin-off novel centered on the character Charlotte, which debuted in Japanese stores in May 2024.
The Detective Is Already Dead Synopsis
The plot closely follows Kimihiko Kimizuka, a high school student with a natural magnet for attracting trouble and getting caught in crime scenes. His life takes a radical turn thousands of feet in the air when he becomes the assistant to a brilliant and mysterious detective known only as Siesta. Together, they travel the world solving unfathomable cases and facing a dangerous secret criminal organization for three intense years. Everything ends abruptly with the detective's tragic death. Attempting to return to a normal school life, Kimihiko discovers that the past refuses to leave him alone when a girl identical to his late partner appears before him.
Do you think this three-month delay will help the studio improve the animation quality compared to the visual inconsistencies presented in the first season?
