Maria Holic Returns: A New Sequel Manga Arrives 12 Months After the Original Story

Sometimes a story lingers in your mind long after the final page, and you find yourself wondering what happened to those characters once the credits rolled. For fans of Maria Holic, that curiosity is about to be rewarded in the most unexpected way. Minari Endo has decided to revisit her iconic manga with a sequel that picks up exactly one year after the original ending, offering a glimpse into a world that many thought had closed its doors for good.

A Sequel Born from Silence

The announcement came quietly, almost as if Endo wanted to let the news speak for itself. On her X account, formerly known as Twitter, she revealed that Maria Holic: Sono Ato no 12-kagetsu no Ohanashi — which translates to Maria Holic: A Story Set 12 Months After — will begin serialization in Kadokawa's Monthly Comic Alive magazine on August 27. It is a title that carries a certain poetic weight, as if the manga itself has been waiting patiently for the right moment to return.

You may remember that the original series first appeared in the inaugural issue of Media Factory's Monthly Comic Alive back in 2006, running for eight years before concluding in November 2014. That is a long time to live with a story, and an even longer time to leave it behind. The new sequel suggests that Endo still has something to say about this strange, comedic world she built.

The Legacy of a Beloved Series

For those who followed the original manga, the journey was never straightforward. Tokyopop published the early volumes in North America, and later One Peace Books took up the mantle to rerelease the series for a new generation of readers. The story also inspired two television anime adaptations in 2009 and 2011, both licensed by Sentai Filmworks. These adaptations brought the eccentric characters and sharp humor to a wider audience, cementing Maria Holic as a cult favorite among fans of comedic romance with a twist.

Endo is no stranger to long-running narratives. Her manga Hatenkō Yūgi began publication in 1999 and did not end until 2022, spanning 24 compiled volumes. Tokyopop released that series in English under the title Dazzle, and a 10-episode anime adaptation aired in Japan in 2008. Directed by Nobuhiro Takamoto at Studio DEEN, with series composition by Yasuhiro Imagawa and character designs by Norikatsu Nakano, the adaptation captured the essence of Endo's detailed storytelling.
