The Japanese government will fund the creation of new indie video games
The Ministry of Economy will finance small developers to export new franchises abroad

Independent development is often a financial abyss that destroys small studios before they even launch their first title. To curb this drain of creative talent, this week the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry of Japan inaugurated a government support fund for video game creation officially titled the IP360 Program. The initiative seeks to inject direct capital into novice creators to export new franchises to the international market.
10 million yen for studios without a budget
The state project is specifically designed for tiny teams or solo developers who do not even have a formally registered company. Applicants can request grants of up to 10 million yen, the approximate equivalent of 60 thousand dollars. This capital will cover half of the total production costs. Creators have absolute freedom to spend the money on technical programming, hiring illustrators, text localization into other languages, or paying for plane tickets to attend international gaming conventions.
The absolute veto on sequels
Securing public funds requires meeting strict bureaucratic rules. The government demands a functional trial version of the work and a verifiable global launch plan. However, the heaviest restriction of the contract prohibits the financing of sequels, updates, or expansions of existing titles. The Japanese state will only risk its funds on completely original intellectual properties. Authorities guaranteed they will not intervene in the narrative nor apply government censorship to the content, in order to respect the vision of the otakus behind the code.

The obsession with 20 trillion
This aggressive financing tactic responds to a large-scale macroeconomic ambition. Japan has set the ambitious government goal of collecting 20 trillion yen from overseas entertainment sales. The main call for applications will open its registration at the end of this March 2026. The selected indie developers will receive financial support until February 2027 to finish polishing their works.
Considering the current dominance of independent games in the market, what video game genre do you think has the best chance of convincing the Japanese government to release the funding?
