The line separating a peaceful slice-of-life account from a profound mystery is often incredibly thin, and no one masters that visual transition better than one of the industry's most beloved studios. This Thursday, the production company ASMIK Ace surprised the otaku community by officially announcing the production of Mebius Dust, a new original anime for television animated by the acclaimed studio Doga Kobo. The revelation arrived accompanied by a beautiful promotional image and an enigmatic video teaser, confirming that the series will light up Japanese screens during the upcoming fall season.

As this is an introductory announcement, the production committee has decided to keep the identity of the voice talents who will play the main trio under wraps, but revealed the heavyweights who will lead the technical team. The main director's chair has been filled by Tarou Iwasaki, a filmmaker with a special touch for drama and character development, recognized for his work on classics such as One Week Friends, Bibliophile Princess, and Baki the Grappler. To ensure that dialogues and tension flow naturally, the series composition was left in the experienced hands of Yoriko Tomita, globally acclaimed for her brilliant adaptation of both seasons of My Dress-Up Darling, as well as recent hits like The Elusive Samurai and Senpai is an Otokonoko.

About the work

The journey of Mebius Dust to television is a true love letter to the creativity of the general public. This story was not born as an adaptation of a successful commercial manga or light novel, but from the mind of writer Hajime Shinagawa, who managed to win the grand prize in the "Kids/Games" category of the prestigious national contest Project Anima in 2019. This unprecedented initiative was created in 2017 by several Japanese entertainment giants with the sole purpose of allowing ordinary people to submit their ideas to be turned into animated franchises. Seven long years after its victory in the contest, the project will finally come to life on television with the unmistakable and warm visual quality that characterizes Doga Kobo.

Synopsis of Mebius Dust

The official premise invites us to step into a deceptively quiet environment. The plot closely follows Araki, Stella, and Olga, three high school students living a seemingly ordinary existence in a cozy and nostalgic downtown neighborhood. Their daily routines consist of enjoying their youth without major worries: spending afternoons playing video games competitively, visiting local relaxing public baths to clear their minds, and walking back home together under the evening light. However, behind this comforting facade, the story constantly hints that there is something much larger hiding in plain sight. Is this really just a simple chronicle of their daily lives, or is there a monumental secret hidden within the walls of their peaceful neighborhood?

Considering Doga Kobo's mastery in animating adorable stories that later reveal deep emotional twists like in Oshi no Ko or Plastic Memories, what kind of dark or magical secret do you think lies behind the peaceful lives of these three students?
