We've got some big news from Academy City, and it's time to say goodbye to a legend. The April issue of Monthly Comic Dengeki Daioh just dropped a major announcement: Motoi Fuyukawa's A Certain Scientific Railgun manga is ending. The final chapter will be published on March 27th, bringing a close to a journey that began way back in 2007.

The Spark That Lit a Franchise

Let's rewind. For those who've been living outside the scientific sprawl, Railgun is the massively popular spinoff from Kazuma Kamachi's A Certain Magical Index universe. Instead of following the magical side, we stick to the high-tech streets of Academy City with its psychic students. Our protagonist? Mikoto Misaka, the third most powerful Level 5 esper and an Electromaster who can throw lightning around like it's nobody's business.

She doesn't work alone, of course. With her best friend Kuroko Shirai and the student law enforcement agency Judgment, Mikoto has spent years uncovering the dark secrets buried beneath her city's shiny surface. Think of it as a supernatural sci-fi detective story, but with way more sparks flying.

A Character For The Ages

Why has this series resonated for so long? A huge part of it is Mikoto herself. Her influence is staggering. For nearly a decade, from 2010 to 2019, she dominated the Kono Light Novel ga Sugoi! female character rankings, taking the #1 spot for nine out of ten years. The only year she didn't win? 2015, when she was narrowly beaten by Yukino Yukinoshita from My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU. That's the kind of staying power most characters can only dream of.

Her cultural impact is even wilder. Her nickname "Biribiri," given by Index protagonist Touma Kamijou, is so iconic it became the namesake for the Chinese streaming giant bilibili. The site still has features named after elements from the manga and celebrates Mikoto's birthday every May 2nd. How many fictional characters get that treatment?

The Anime Legacy and What Comes Next

The manga's success naturally led to anime, and what an anime it's been. We've had three fantastic seasons:

  • The first season in 2009.
  • A Certain Scientific Railgun S in 2013.
  • A Certain Scientific Railgun T in 2020.

The music alone left a permanent mark. fripSide's opening theme "only my railgun" became a karaoke standard in Japan, consistently ranking high on song popularity lists. It's the kind of track that gets an entire room singing.

And here's the good news for fans feeling the blues: the story isn't completely over. A fourth anime season has already been green-lit. So while the manga is reaching its narrative conclusion, we'll still get to see Mikoto and the gang animated again.

The End of an Era, But Not The World

With the 20th compiled volume released in Japan last June, and the 19th English volume from Seven Seas out this past February, the pieces are in place for a satisfying finale. The broader To Aru universe, of course, continues to expand with other spinoffs like A Certain Scientific Accelerator.

It's the end of a major chapter for a character who helped define a genre. We'll miss the monthly adventures in Academy City, but we're excited to see how Fuyukawa wraps it all up. What are your favorite Railgun moments? Are you ready for the finale, or are you dreading the goodbye?
