Unison Square Garden Announces Hiatus After Drummer Takao Suzuki's Departure
A 22-year rock journey pauses as artistic visions diverge, leaving a legacy of anime hits and chart-topping albums.

The stage lights at Makuhari Messe will dim for more than just an encore this July. Unison Square Garden, the Japanese rock band whose energetic tunes have powered countless anime openings, has announced an indefinite hiatus following drummer Takao Suzuki's departure. The curtain call will be their live performance, aptly titled "Sentimental Period," on July 15th. After 22 years of syncopated rhythms and harmonious melodies, the trio has decided they can no longer march to the same beat.
The Rhythm Section Loses a Key Player
The official word from their agency, Sony Music Artists, frames it as a conclusion reached after long-term discussions about the band's future. In simpler terms, the creative compasses of the three members began pointing in different directions. They spent years trying to navigate as a unit, but eventually had to admit that continuing as a three-piece band with diverging artistic visions and personal expressions was like trying to fit a square peg into a round garden. The result is Takao Suzuki's exit and the suspension of all band activities.
In a message to their fans, the band expressed profound gratitude. They credited fan loyalty as the very glue that held them together for over two decades. The announcement, they admit, is sudden, and they apologize for the shock. They asked for continued warm support for all three members: vocalist/guitarist Kousuke Saitou, bassist Tomoya Tabuchi, and the departing Takao Suzuki.

A Hiatus, Not a Goodbye: The Saitou Perspective
Kousuke Saitou provided further context, shedding light on the difficult decision. He explained that the choice to enter a hiatus rather than outright disband was a deliberate one. It was a nod to the many voices—fans and perhaps within themselves—who wished for Unison Square Garden to continue existing in some form. "We chose a hiatus after considering many voices who wished for Unison Square Garden to continue in some form," Saitou stated. It's the musical equivalent of putting a beloved series on hold, leaving the door slightly ajar rather than slamming it shut.
A Legacy Built on Cider Roads and Anime Roads
Formed in July 2004 and making their major debut in 2008 with the single "Sentimental Period," Unison Square Garden carved out a unique space in the Japanese rock scene. Their journey was marked by a series of creatively titled and commercially successful albums like "Cider Road,""Catcher in the Spy," and "Dr. Izzy." Their 2019 album "Ninth Peel" even snagged the top spot on the Oricon charts, a significant milestone.
For many international fans, however, their gateway was through anime. The band's fingerprints are all over the last decade of anime soundtracks. They provided the explosive opening "Hello, world!" for Kekkai Sensen (Blood Blockade Battlefront), the driving intensity of "Chaos ga Kiwamaru" for Blue Lock, and poignant themes for series like 3-gatsu no Lion and Ballroom e Youkoso. Their music wasn't just background noise; it was the emotional engine for some of anime's most memorable moments.
The Final Bow and the Silence After
Their 20th-anniversary live, "ROCK BAND is fun," at the Nippon Budokan in 2024 now stands as a triumphant, if bittersweet, capstone to this era. The upcoming July performance will be their last as the Unison Square Garden we've known for 22 years. What comes next for Saitou and Tabuchi remains unwritten, and the same goes for Suzuki. The hiatus leaves a quiet space in the anime rock scene—a space once filled with their distinctive, upbeat, and technically precise sound. For now, we're left with their extensive discography and the hope that, someday, the right creative winds might bring some form of the Garden back into bloom.
