We finally have a solid date on the calendar for Though I Am an Inept Villainess—and pucha, it feels like getting the invite after the party moved venues twice. The TV anime has revealed a fresh new visual and confirmed its premiere for July 12. We’re marking it down, grabbing snacks, and pretending we were always chill about the wait.

Premiere date, time, and where it airs

The series will debut in Japan on July 12 at 11:45 p.m. on TV Tokyo and its affiliates. The show was originally aiming for an April premiere, but production progress slowed the chamba down, so the launch slid into July.

We also get the good news on streaming: Crunchyroll will stream it as it airs across a huge list of regions, including North America, Central America, South America, Europe, Africa, Oceania, the Middle East, CIS, and the Indian Subcontinent.

Are you planning to watch it weekly on Crunchyroll, or are we doing the classic “let it stack and binge later” move?

The creative team leading the charge

Dōga Kōbō is handling the animation, and we’re getting a staff lineup that looks pretty mostro on paper:

  • Director: Mitsue Yamazaki (How Heavy Are the Dumbbells You Lift?, Monthly Girls' Nozaki-kun)
  • Series Composition / Scripts: Yoshiko Nakamura (Detective Conan: Zero's Tea Time, Tadaima, Okaeri, The Helpful Fox Senko-san)
  • Character Design: Ai Kikuchi (How Heavy Are the Dumbbells You Lift?, New Game!, Shikimori's Not Just a Cutie)

And yes, the anime is also set to star Manaka Iwami. Asumadre, that’s a solid pull.

What this story is actually about (and why it hits)

We’re in a kingdom inspired by historical China, where five powerful clans send their maidens to the imperial court. Only one will become empress. In the spotlight stands the frail, dazzling Kou Reirin—nicknamed the “butterfly” of the court—basically the expected winner.

But the court isn't a ballroom; it's a shark tank with silk sleeves. During the Lantern Festival, Shu Keigetsu—the “court rat”—lashes out, and suddenly Reirin wakes up in the dungeons. The twist? A body swap. The attacker aims to steal Reirin’s position, leaving Reirin to face punishment and even execution.

Here’s the fun part: Reirin doesn’t crumble. She gets a sturdier body, a sharper edge, and a new way to fight back. It’s like watching a butterfly decide to bite. We love that for her.

From light novel to manga to anime: the bigger picture

The series began as a light novel by Satsuki Nakamura with illustrations by YukiKana, launching in December 2020. A manga adaptation by Ei Ohitsuji also started in Monthly Comic Zero-Sum.

For English readers, Seven Seas publishes both versions under the long (but very clear) title: Though I Am an Inept Villainess: Tale of the Butterfly-Rat Body Swap in the Maiden Court.

  • Japan: Light novel volume 12 released March 31
  • English: Light novel volume 10 released May 5
  • English: Manga volume 8 released December 16

Call to action: Let’s do this properly—add Though I Am an Inept Villainess to your July watchlist, and tell us what you want most: ruthless court politics, glow-up revenge, or pure body-swap chaos.
