Combining the aesthetics of traditional magical girls with the inexhaustible energy of idols is a formula designed to dazzle. However, for that magic to reach its full visual and sonic potential, the jump to the big screen is an almost mandatory step. This Saturday, the production company Bandai Namco Filmworks officially announced the production of a compilation film for the original TV anime, Maebashi Witches. The production committee confirmed that this feature film will condense the best moments and the complete story of the 12 episodes of the series that originally aired last year.

Although an exact release date for the film's theatrical debut has not yet been revealed, the franchise will maintain an active presence on screens. The committee announced that the original television series will have a full rebroadcast in Japan starting next April 5 through networks such as Tokyo MX and BS11. To accompany this wave of announcements, the lead voice actresses will bring the magic to the real world with a series of special live concerts, beginning with a presentation at AnimeJapan on March 28, followed by solo shows in Tokyo on May 24 and in Osaka on May 31.

The production of this colorful universe remains under the leadership of studio Bandai Namco Filmworks in collaboration with PROJECT MBW. Junichi Yamamoto holds the director's chair, backed by scripts by Erika Yoshida. Character designs are handled by Nozomi Tachibana, based on original sketches by Yu Inami. Additionally, Yoshiki Imazu is responsible for designing the unique aesthetic of the magical world, while the musical scores are the work of Yuri Habuka.

The announcement reaffirmed the participation of the talented performers who make up the main voice cast and bring this charismatic squad to life:

  • Sakura Kasuga as Yuina Akagi.

A young voice acting talent who leads this project, lending her voice to the story's energetic protagonist.

  • Hinano Sakikawa as Azu Niisato.

An emerging actress who complements the magical group's dynamic with her vocal skills.

  • Rena Motomura as Kyoka Kitahara.

A fundamental part of the main quintet, contributing her talent both in voice acting and in live musical performances.

  • Haruka Minami as Choco Mitsumata.

An indispensable voice within the witch squad that protects the city through song.

  • Honami Momose as Mai Kamiizumi.

Actress and singer who completes the main lineup of these contemporary heroines.

  • Tomokazu Sugita as Keroppe.

An absolute legend of the industry, world-famous for embodying Gintoki Sakata in Gintama, lending his unmistakable voice to the group's magical frog mascot.

About the work

Unlike projects born in the pages of a manga magazine or on novel websites, Maebashi Witches is a completely original intellectual property conceived directly for television. During its 12-episode broadcast, the franchise stood out enormously for its musical aspect. The five main voice actresses did not limit themselves only to dubbing, but formed a real idol group to perform the catchy opening titled "Sugosugi Maebashi Witches!" and the melancholic ending "Sorezore no Door," songs that will surely resonate even more powerfully in the audio mix of the upcoming compilation film.

Maebashi Witches Synopsis

The plot transports us to the peaceful city of Maebashi, in Gunma Prefecture. There we meet Yuina Akagi, a first-year high school student who leads a completely ordinary and monotonous school life. Her routine is shattered the day she crosses paths with Keroppe, a peculiar talking frog who chooses her and four other girls to become the "Maebashi Witches." Overnight, an ordinary closet in her room transforms into a direct portal to a vibrant magical world connected to a mysterious flower shop. In this dazzling new environment, the five young women must learn to master their hidden powers, using singing and dancing as magical catalysts to grant the deepest wishes of the people around them.

Do you think compilation films are the best way to introduce new viewers to an original franchise, or do you prefer to watch the full TV series?
