Reincarnating in a fantasy world as a knight or an elite mage is the norm, but waking up at the bottom of the food chain as a disposable monster completely changes the rules of the survival game. This Wednesday, the official website for the anime adaptation of the popular isekai manga written by Nazuna Miki and illustrated by Tsukasa Araki, So What's Wrong with Getting Reborn as a Goblin? (Tensei Goblin dakedo Shitsumon Aru?), released its first promotional trailer. The brief video teaser served to reveal the main production team and confirmed that the series will begin broadcasting on Japanese television during the upcoming October season.

The complex task of animating this unusual story of monstrous evolution was entrusted to the animation studio BAKKKA. The lead director's chair is occupied by Ryuta Kawahara, while the scripts and overall series composition are under the supervision of Yuichiro Momose. The original character designs are being adapted for the television format by artist Hiroyuki Saita. In the audio department, Hiroto Morishita takes on the sound direction, backed by musical scores from composer Takenoko Boy.

The official statement stood out especially for the revelation of the talents that will make up the dynamic main voice cast for this high-fantasy survival adventure:

  • Kikunosuke Toya as Akira Yagami.

An actor catapulted to global fame for bringing the chaotic Denji to life in the phenomenon Chainsaw Man, taking on the leading role of the reincarnated office worker.

  • Yoko Hikasa as Karen.

A true industry veteran, acclaimed for portraying Rias Gremory in High School DxD, playing a ruthless goblin hunter.

  • Azusa Tachibana as Chloe.

A rising young talent joining the project to voice a mysterious and powerful demon girl.

About the Work

Writer Nazuna Miki and illustrator Tsukasa Araki began serializing this fun deconstruction of the monstrous reincarnation trope through Shueisha's Tonari no Young Jump web platform in 2020. Its refreshing premise and the protagonist's constant effort to break the limits of his weak species managed to build a solid fan base. The commercial success of the print format allowed it to release its fourteenth collected volume in Japanese stores on March 18, perfectly setting the stage for its imminent television debut in the fall.

Synopsis of So What's Wrong with Getting Reborn as a Goblin?

The plot follows the tragic life of Akira Yagami, a routine and exhausted Japanese office worker whose fate ends abruptly and heroically when he sacrifices his life to save a child from a car accident. As a karmic reward, Akira wakes up in a fantasy world, but his surprise is monumental when he discovers that he has not been reincarnated as a human, but as a repulsive and weak goblin. To make matters worse, in this new world, the biological life expectancy of a goblin is a mere seven miserable days. However, thanks to a unique special power granted during his reincarnation, Akira manages to evade his imminent death and gains the ability to live much longer. Determined not to waste this second chance, the protagonist will use his human intellect and extra time to train relentlessly, face lethal hunters like Karen, ally with demons like Chloe, and prove to the entire world that even the most pathetic monster can evolve into the strongest creature in all of creation.

With so many monstrous reincarnation isekais on the market, do you think the seven-day life limit will be enough of a tension factor to set this series apart from the rest during the fall season?
