MAPPA Absorbs Studio Contrail: A Strategic Move in the Industry
The sibling studio merges with the giant behind Jujutsu Kaisen to face financial challenges

We are witnessing a new shift in the anime industry landscape. MAPPA, the powerhouse we all know for its high-octane productions, has decided to officially absorb its sibling, Studio Contrail. This merger means MAPPA assumes every single right and obligation of the smaller studio. We see a clear move to centralize power while keeping the creative essence alive. It is like a big brother taking the reins of the family business to keep the lights on.
The Financial Reality Behind the Scenes
Numbers do not lie, and sometimes they tell a bit of a sad story. We found out through recent reports that Contrail closed its sixth fiscal period in March 2025 with a net loss. We are talking about 68 million yen, which is roughly US$435,000. It is a significant hurdle for any creative house. Despite the merger, the Contrail brand will not disappear. We will still see their name on screen, but now under the direct management of MAPPA.
Why do these things happen? Well, producing high-quality animation is expensive. We can think of several examples where smaller studios struggle to stay afloat alone:
- Rising production costs for fluid animation.
- The fierce competition for top-tier talent in Tokyo.
- Tight deadlines that require massive infrastructure.
Is it better to be a small fish in a big pond or part of the whale? We think MAPPA is becoming quite the whale lately. Who knows, maybe they just wanted a bigger office for their Netflix meetings!
A History of Collaboration and Future Projects
This is not a meeting between strangers. We remember their collaboration on the anime short Kikasete Hoshii Kimi no Koto back in April 2025. They have been flirting with this idea for a while. Sunao Katabuchi, the brilliant director behind Black Lagoon and In This Corner of the World, founded Contrail in 2019. He wanted a space to create meaningful stories, and we are glad that vision continues.
What is on the horizon?
We are currently waiting for The Mourning Children: Nagiko and the Girls Wearing Tsurubami Black. This project is still under Contrail production. Also, let us not forget their work for the 10th anniversary of Shonen Jump+. They have been busy! With MAPPA's new strategic partnership with Netflix, these projects might get even more global eyes. We imagine the Netflix executives are very happy right now with this expansion.
We see MAPPA growing and growing. They are taking over story development and even merchandise. It is a total takeover of the creative process. We wonder if this will lead to more stability for the animators or just more work on their plates.
Do you think these big mergers are good for the creative freedom of directors like Katabuchi? What is your opinion on MAPPA becoming such a massive empire in the industry?
