The editorial department of Monthly Shonen Magazine (owned by the publisher Kodansha) issued an official statement to announce the immediate and final cancellation of the serialization of the manga Oshiawase ni Konyakusha-sama. Watashi mo Watashi de Shiawase ni Narimasunode. The drastic decision was made following the discovery that the illustrator in charge of the adaptation committed plagiarism by tracing art from other works without authorization.

The issue came to light when readers identified multiple undeniable similarities between the panels of this manga and the art of other established series. After conducting an internal investigation and a direct confrontation with the person responsible, the graphic artist admitted that their level of "imitation" had far exceeded the limits of what is considered acceptable use of visual references. As a result of this confession, Kodansha ordered the immediate suspension of the series' distribution across all its digital platforms, including Palcy, Getsumaga Kichi, and Comic DAYS.

The official statement clearly identified the members of the creative team involved in the development of the original work and the failed adaptation:

  • gorogoro mikan as Original Author.

The creative mind behind the successful light novel series that served as the narrative source material for this project.

  • HIROKAZU as Character Designer.

The original illustrator credited with creating the drafts and base visual concepts for the franchise's protagonists.

  • Matsurika as Manga Illustrator.

The artist hired to adapt the story into comic format, whose serialization was terminated after admitting to art plagiarism.

About the work

Originally, the story managed to establish itself within the light novel format, garnering enough attention to guarantee a manga adaptation. The project was part of the monthly magazine's regular lineup until this copyright scandal was uncovered. In addition to canceling the main series, the publisher confirmed that the one-shot titled Shinitagari no Hashi no Ue, previously drawn by the same artist (Matsurika), will also be removed from their catalogs due to the same infractions. In their apology statement, the editorial department assured that they are taking the incident with extreme seriousness and promised to strengthen their review filters to prevent future tracing.

Synopsis of Oshiawase ni Konyakusha-sama. Watashi mo Watashi de Shiawase ni Narimasunode

The plot of the original light novel explores the classic broken engagement trope from a perspective focused on maturity and personal growth. The protagonist faces the sudden and public cancellation of her arranged marriage, watching as her fiancé chooses to start a relationship with another woman. However, instead of falling into absolute despair, causing a scene, or seeking revenge to ruin her ex-partner, she takes a pragmatic route. Genuinely wishing happiness for her now ex-fiancé, the heroine decides to step away from the toxicity of the nobility to embark on her own personal journey, building a new, peaceful, and independent life to find happiness on her own terms.

Considering the sudden cancellation that left the story unfinished in visual format, do you think Kodansha will attempt to find a new illustrator in the future to restart the manga and do justice to the original novel?
