We have been waiting for this moment like a mage waiting for a full moon. The magic is finally happening. During a special event held this Tuesday, the official release date for the film adaptation of Mahōtsukai no Yoru (Witch on the Holy Night) was finally unveiled. We are packing our bags for a trip back to the late 1980s, where modern mages and high school drama collide in the most spectacular way possible.

Mark Your Calendars: The Premiere Date

The wait is almost over. We will be able to watch the Mahōtsukai no Yoru film in theaters starting November 20. It feels like just yesterday when we were clicking through the visual novel on our PCs, and now, we get to see Aoko and Alice in full cinematic glory. Is it too early to buy popcorn? Maybe, but we are already excited.

The film brings back the voices we already love from the game. We are talking about a top-tier cast that knows these characters inside out:

  • Haruka Tomatsu as the fiery Aoko Aozaki.
  • Kana Hanazawa as the mysterious Alice Kuonji.
  • Yūsuke Kobayashi as the clueless but charming Sōjūrō Shizuki.

A Story of Witches and Student Councils

We find ourselves in a lonely manor atop a hill. Aoko Aozaki is a busy girl. She is the student council president, but she also has to deal with a family legacy she never really wanted. Suddenly, she is the heir to a long line of mages. Talk about a stressful extracurricular activity! Under the guidance of Alice Kuonji, Aoko learns the arcane arts while trying to survive high school.

Then there is Sōjūrō Shizuki. He is a transfer student who knows basically nothing about the modern world. Watching him navigate 1980s technology is almost as funny as watching Aoko try to hide her magical powers. But it's not all laughs; Aoko's older sister, Tōko Aozaki, is lurking in the shadows, and she is definitely not happy about being skipped over for the family inheritance. Family dinners must be very awkward for them.

The Deep Roots of the Nasuverse

We love a good crossover, and Mahōtsukai no Yoru is the ultimate puzzle piece. This story is a cornerstone of what fans call the "Nasuverse." It connects everything we love about Type-Moon. Did you know that an older Aoko appears in Tsukihime? Or that Tōko shows up in The Garden of Sinners? It is all connected! This project actually started as a novel in the mid-90s before becoming the visual novel we played in 2012. It has been a long journey from a draft shared among friends to a high-budget film by ufotable.

The Legacy of Type-Moon

We have seen the growth of this franchise firsthand. The Mahōtsukai no Yoru game recently hit Steam in 2023, and the console versions for PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch have already sold over 150,000 copies worldwide. People clearly want more magic in their lives. With the success of the Tsukihime -A piece of blue glass moon- remake, the momentum for Type-Moon stories is at an all-time high.

Are you ready to see the Aozaki sisters clash on the big screen? Do you think Sōjūrō will finally understand how a telephone works? Tell us what you think in the comments!
