Animating the climax of a massive battle royale demands a perfect rhythm that cannot be constrained by strict television commercial breaks. To do justice to the intensity of the fights, the official website for the anime adaptation of the shonen written and illustrated by Gege Akutami, Jujutsu Kaisen, announced this Thursday that the twelfth and final episode of the first cour of its third season will feature a special duration. The chapter, which marks the 59th episode of the franchise globally, will be an extended 27-minute broadcast and will air on March 26.

Regular episodes on Japanese television typically last between 23 and 24 minutes. These valuable extra minutes will allow the animation team to capture the brutality and scale of the confrontations without rushing the narrative. The episode will be titled "Sendai Colony," marking the peak of this first half of the bloody Culling Game arc.

The production of this brutal installment remains under the same technical structure as previous seasons. Shota Goshozono continues at the helm in the lead director's chair. Hiroshi Seko remains in charge of structuring the raw scripts, while Yoshimasa Terui composes the immersive soundtrack. The musical department also features the explosive opening by the band King Gnu and the melancholic ending performed by the artist jo0ji.

About the work

Master Gege Akutami serialized this dark global phenomenon in the pages of the legendary Weekly Shonen Jump magazine for over six years, concluding its publication definitively in September 2024. The animated franchise began airing its third season on January 8 with a massive one-hour special. With the conclusion of this first part set for late March, the production committee has not yet revealed the exact date when the broadcast of the project's second half will resume.

Which combat choreography from the Sendai Colony are you most looking forward to seeing animated with greater fluidity thanks to these extra minutes on screen?
