Before the legendary Yorozuya agency conquered the world with its absurd humor and samurai battles, a small tale about angels and spirits laid the foundation for one of the most important mangakas of this century. Rescuing the origins of a master is always an event worthy of celebration. This Friday, during the platform's special panel at the AnimeJapan 2026 event, a new promotional trailer was released for the anime adaptation of Dandelion, based on the original one-shot by Hideaki Sorachi. The announcement officially confirmed that the series will consist of a total of seven episodes and will make its exclusive global debut through the Netflix catalog on April 16.

The task of capturing Sorachi's unmistakable visual style and bittersweet tone has been entrusted to the animation studio NAZ. The director's chair is occupied by Daisuke Mataga, working alongside Yosuke Suzuki, who is in charge of structuring the overall scripts for this short series. Artist Ai Asari leads the adaptation of character designs, while the emotive musical scores are the work of the celebrated Yuki Hayashi. Furthermore, it was confirmed that the series' main theme song will be titled "Goron to Doron," performed by the artist Kocchi no Kento.

The announcement at AnimeJapan set social media ablaze by revealing a massive voice cast that not only includes industry heavyweights but also marks the emotional reunion of the legendary protagonist trio of Gintama (Sugita, Kugimiya, and Sakaguchi) in a new work by their creator:

  • Chikahiro Kobayashi as Tetsuo Tanba.

Actor responsible for guiding the story by playing the peculiar and stoic agent in charge of dispatching souls.

  • Megumi Han as Misaki Kurogane.

Voice of Tetsuo's charismatic partner, forming the main duo of this celestial federation.

  • Tomokazu Sugita as Kikugumi Squad Leader.

The unmistakable actor behind Gintoki Sakata returns to the Sorachi universe to bring this mysterious masked man to life.

  • Rie Kugimiya as Asako.

The legendary voice of Kagura joins the project to play Misaki Kurogane's mother.

  • Daisuke Sakaguchi as Raymond Honda.

Closing the reunion of the Yorozuya trio (Shinpachi), Sakaguchi will lend his voice to this eccentric professor.

  • Mamoru Miyano as Seiki Kyokawa.

International voice acting star who will bring his immense charisma to one of the key members of the Kyokawa family.

  • Kensho Ono as Yuichi Kyokawa and Yuki Ono as Shinji Kyokawa.

Both top-tier actors complete the dynamic of this important group of brothers within the plot.

About the Work

For manga historians, Dandelion is an invaluable collector's piece. This one-shot (a self-contained single-chapter story) was the work with which master Hideaki Sorachi made his professional debut in the pages of the mythical Weekly Shonen Jump magazine in 2002. Its quality and unique sense of humor were so well-regarded that, years later, the publisher Shueisha decided to include this short story in the first printed compilation volume of Gintama. This seven-episode miniseries marks the first time Sorachi's pilot story receives a full animated treatment, expanding the original material for television.

Dandelion Synopsis

The plot immerses us in a bureaucratic and supernatural plane where Tetsuo Tanba and Misaki Kurogane operate, two peculiar agents working for the "Farewell Department of the Japan Federation of Angels." Their daily task consists of descending to the earthly world to locate wandering souls that have become trapped in limbo, unable to ascend to the afterlife because they still harbor strong regrets, broken promises, or unfinished business from their past lives. Through unconventional methods, sarcastic humor, and a lot of empathy, Tetsuo and Misaki will be in charge of helping these spirits resolve their earthly conflicts so they can finally rest in peace, discovering in the process the true weight of human bonds.

Knowing that Sugita, Kugimiya, and Sakaguchi are part of this massive cast, do you think studio NAZ will take the opportunity to include any hidden references or inside jokes about Gintama throughout these seven episodes?
