Dara-san of Reiwa Anime Unveils Star-Studded Cast & July Premiere Date
Aoi Koga, Tomokazu Sugita, and more join this quirky supernatural comedy. The series about a terrifyingly cute misfortune god arrives with two broadcast versions.

The mountain forest is dark, the rain is relentless, and two lost children stumble upon a broken fence and a buried warning. It's the classic setup for a horror story. But in the world of Dara-san of Reiwa, this is merely the charmingly awkward meet-cute for our protagonists and their new, surprisingly demanding divine acquaintance. The television anime adaptation of Haruomi Tomotsuka's manga has just dropped a second trailer, revealing a powerhouse cast and locking in a July 2 premiere. It seems the Reiwa era is about to get a lot more... unfortunate, in the best possible way.
A Divine Cast for a Grotesque Goddess

If you're going to introduce a self-proclaimed "god of misfortune" who is frustrated that people aren't scared of her, you need voice actors who can balance menace with comedic timing. The new cast announcements hit the bullseye. Aoi Koga (Kaguya-sama: Love is War) takes on the role of Amane Hasegawa, one of the wandering siblings. The legendary Tomokazu Sugita (Gintoki from Gintama) will voice Naomichi Fudeki. Mai Aizawa joins as Miwa Ikago, while the always stellar Saori Hayami plays the Older Sister Shrine Maiden. Rounding out the new additions is Hōchū Ōtsuka as the ominously named Orochi. They join a production led by director Tadato Suzuki (Gushing Over Magical Girls) and character designer Koichi Kikuta of KONOSUBA fame. The pieces are in place for something special.
Two Broadcasts, One Unlucky Deity
In a move that reflects the series' dual nature—both creepy and cute—the anime will premiere in two different versions. The "Reiwa no Jidai ni Daijōbu nano!?" (Is this really okay in the Reiwa era!?) version kicks things off on July 2 at 9:30 PM JST on AT-X. The regular version follows later that night on Tokyo MX and other channels. It's a clever strategy, letting audiences choose their level of immersion into Dara-san's world. The new trailer also gave us a preview of the ending theme, "Hinatabocchi" by REIRIE, which promises to be a fittingly quirky accompaniment to the closing credits.
The Story: Horror Setup, Comedy Payoff
Yen Press, which is releasing the manga in English, sums up the tonal whiplash perfectly. The description starts with all the atmospheric dread of a classic ghost story: crushing landslides, forbidding forests, and long, horrid shadows. Then, it immediately pivots: "Anyway, so that's how we met Dara-san! She might look kinda scary, but just wait until you get to know her!" The manga's humor stems from Dara-san's existential crisis. She's a terrifying, grotesque entity of misfortune, and these darn modern (Reiwa-era) kids just aren't properly afraid of her. It's a hilarious premise that turns traditional monster tropes on their head.
From Twitter to Television: Dara-san's Journey
Like many modern cult hits, Dara-san of Reiwa began life humbly on Twitter (now X) back in October 2019. Its popularity grew through Comic Market (Comiket) releases before finding a formal home on Kadokawa's ComicWalker site in 2022. The manga's eighth volume hits Japanese shelves on June 23, the same day Yen Press releases the third English volume. The anime's arrival marks the next logical step for this story that so brilliantly mixes the spooky with the silly.
So, mark your calendars for July 2. Prepare to meet a goddess who just wants to be taken seriously as a harbinger of doom, but will probably end up being the season's most lovable misfit. In an anime landscape full of overpowered heroes and tragic backstories, a comedy about an unlucky deity's struggle for respect is a refreshing change of pace. Let's just hope her misfortune doesn't affect the broadcast schedules.
