The Bugle Call Anime Adaptation Blasts Onto the Scene with 2027 Premiere
Shinya Watada directs the epic war fantasy manga's television debut, promising a symphony of sound and slaughter.

Let's be honest, the battlefield is a noisy place. But what if the most dangerous weapon wasn't a sword or a gun, but a musical note? That's the symphony of conflict we're about to witness. CyberAgent's CA Soa studio just dropped the news that's louder than a cannon blast: a television anime adaptation of Mozuku Sora and Higoro Tōmori's manga, The Bugle Call: Song of War (Sensō Kyōshitsu), is marching our way for a 2027 premiere. They even brought a teaser trailer and visual to set the stage. This isn't your average war story; it's a composition where every clash is a crescendo.
The Conductor and His Orchestra

Every great performance needs a maestro, and this anime has secured a seasoned one. Directing the adaptation is Shinya Watada, a name familiar to fans of Gundam Build Fighters Try and Aikatsu Stars!. He's not conducting this symphony alone. Handling the series scripts is Michiro Tsuchiya, whose recent work on the acclaimed Akane-banashi shows a deft hand for character-driven narrative. The character designs, which will give visual form to this war-torn world, are in the capable hands of Michinori Chiba (known for Sk8 the Infinity and Mobile Suit Gundam 00). To set the mood, composer Hitomi Kotō (Sparks of Tomorrow) will craft the score, while action animator Hiroshi Arisawa ensures the battles have the right impact. With concept design by Kanetake Ebikawa and props by Takayuki Yanase, this is a production team built for epic scale.
A World Built on Sound and Steel
For those who haven't picked up Viz Media's English releases, the premise is a fascinating blend of fantasy and warfare. The year is Arboral 1294. The landscape is dominated by nine colossal Spires—relics of a lost, advanced civilization that nations kill to control. Our protagonist, Luca, is a simple bugler in a mercenary company. His dream? To ditch the battlefield and become a true maestro. But fate has a different tune in mind. Luca is "Branch-hexed," marked with an enigmatic power that allows him to literally see the sound from his instrument. This unique gift doesn't lead him to a concert hall; it drags him deeper into the heart of a colossal war. After being left for dead, he's saved by the mysterious Pontiff, who reveals Luca isn't the only one with strange abilities. The Pontiff is assembling a special team of the Branch-hexed, and Luca's dream of music is about to be permanently retuned into the "muse of massacre." His bugle calls won't signal retreat; they'll herald destruction.
The Manga's March to the Screen
The source material has been building its own fanbase since its debut in Shueisha's Jump SQ. magazine back in June 2022. It later moved to the seasonal Jump SQ. RISE magazine this past April. With the 13th compiled volume shipped in February and Viz Media releasing the sixth English volume just this past April, the story has been gaining momentum. Shueisha even hinted last September that the manga was approaching its "final battle," suggesting the anime adaptation might arrive just in time to visualize the climax of this epic saga. It's perfect timing—like a well-placed dramatic pause before the finale.
What to Expect When the Horns Blow
With a 2027 premiere date, we have some time to wait. But the announced staff alone gives us plenty to speculate on. Watada's experience with the colorful, combat-heavy world of Gundam Build Fighters Try suggests he can handle the dynamic action this series demands. Chiba's character designs are known for their sharp, modern aesthetic, which could translate the manga's look into fluid animation beautifully. The real wild card, and perhaps the most crucial element, will be the sound design and music. How do you animate someone seeing sound? This concept is the series' unique hook, and its execution will make or break the adaptation. Will it be abstract visual waves? Literal, colorful notes hanging in the air? We're eager to see how this auditory superpower is visualized.
So, mark your calendars for 2027. It seems we're in for a war story where the soundtrack is a character, the artillery is orchestral, and the hero's instrument is as deadly as any blade. We recommend catching up on the Viz Media releases now. That way, when the anime's first bugle call echoes through your speakers, you'll already know the melody of the coming storm.
