Maintaining the relevance and fervor of an audience for nearly two decades is a feat that only works destined to become legends manage to achieve. The electric glow of anime's most famous coin has cast its final spark on paper. This Friday, March 27, the acclaimed science fiction and action mangaA Certain Scientific Railgun (Toaru Kagaku no Railgun), officially concluded its serialization after 19 years of history. The final chapter was published in the May 2026 issue of Kadokawa's Monthly Comic Dengeki Daioh magazine, marking the end of an era for the Toaru franchise.

The conclusion of the work has generated a wave of nostalgia and gratitude on social media, where readers have described the ending as "absolutely perfect." The special edition of the magazine included a tribute segment where the original author, Kazuma Kamachi, and designer Kiyotaka Haimura shared their impressions. Additionally, various mangakas from the franchise, such as Chuuya Kogino and Arata Yamaji, contributed commemorative illustrations. Even Satoshi Yaginuma, composer for fripSide and creator of the iconic anthem "only my railgun," dedicated some words to the work's closure.

The farewell to the panels also featured emotional messages from the voice cast who brought the characters to life on television:

  • Rina Sato (Voice of Mikoto Misaka).

The actress expressed her deep gratitude for having voiced the "Railgun" for so long, considering it one of the most important roles of her career.

  • Satomi Arai (Voice of Kuroko Shirai).

She shared a message full of affection for her "Onee-sama," celebrating the character's growth through the years.

  • Aki Toyosaki (Voice of Kazari Uiharu) and Kanae Ito (Voice of Ruiko Saten).

Both actresses highlighted the beautiful friendship of the main quartet that remained steadfast until the final pages.

About the work

Originally born in 2007 as a spin-off of the A Certain Magical Index light novels, this series illustrated by Motoi Fuyukawa achieved something unusual: surpassing the main work in popularity across various sectors of the global fandom. Focusing on the scientific side of Academy City, A Certain Scientific Railgun masterfully balanced dark political conflicts with endearing moments of school life. With three highly successful anime seasons and a fourth season already confirmed in production, the legacy of the Academy City girls will continue to expand on the small screen despite the end of its original source.
