In the year 2138, the celebrated virtual reality game Yggdrasil servers are scheduled for termination. When the final hour arrives, veteran player Momonga chooses to remain logged in. To his astonishment, the game world does not vanish, and he finds himself permanently transformed into his in-game avatar: the skeletal, supremely powerful archmage Ainz Ooal Gown.

The once-static non-player characters of his guild's Great Tomb of Nazarick are now living, breathing beings with their own fervent loyalties. With no ties to the real world, Ainz resolves to explore this new reality and uncover its secrets, while his devoted NPC followers see him as the supreme ruler destined to conquer it all.
