In the bustling Edo period, Matsunaga Gengo, once renowned as the Fire-eating Bird for his legendary firefighting skills, has left his past behind. But when he receives an unexpected invitation from the destitute Shinjo clan fire brigade, he is drawn back into the world of flames and rescue.

With the support of his wife, Miyuki, Gengo takes on the daunting task of rebuilding the ragtag team, dubbed the Boro-Tobi-Gumi or "ragged steeplejacks," who are mocked by all. Despite their quirks and lack of resources, they share an unwavering commitment: to save any life at any cost.

Their resolve is tested as a series of enigmatic blazes, known as foxfires, plague the city. This anime blends intense action with heartfelt drama, following Gengo and his peculiar comrades as they scramble to protect Edo from impending disaster.
