Hiding behind a keyboard or using strange nicknames to insult content creators is no longer an invincible shield. The company Virtual Entertainment, which operates the popular talent agency Vspo!, has just made a major statement by announcing that they officially won a defamation lawsuit against an individual dedicated to harassing and tarnishing the reputation of their VTuber, Kaga Nazuna.

Being smarter than the law didn't work

The truly interesting part of this case is how the aggressor operated. The hater in question tried to be clever by using ateji (substitute characters) and censored words to insult the girl without mentioning her name directly. Initially, the agency tried to reach an amicable settlement after authorities revealed the user's identity, but due to the lack of a sincere apology and a refusal to pay, they took the case to the Tokyo District Court. As expected, the judge ruled in favor of the company, forcing the attacker to pay the full compensation, including interest for the delay.

A relentless hunt against internet trolls

In their statement, the agency left a brutal and crystal-clear warning for the entire community: using indirect names, misleading hashtags, or censoring letters does not save you from legal responsibility. If the context of the posts makes it clear who you are attacking, the full weight of the law will fall upon you. Vspo! confirmed that their specialized committee continues to work simultaneously on multiple cases of harassment against other talents and is even pursuing those who infringe on their copyrights with unauthorized explicit illustrations.

Knowing that Japanese agencies are finally using the law to curb aggression disguised as humor or criticism, do you think these types of rulings will manage to scare off trolls and clean up some of the toxicity on social media?
