If your knees ache when it rains or you catch yourself complaining about "kids these days" and their music, get ready to feel even older. It has been 17 years since a group of girls drinking tea and eating cake completely revolutionized the anime industry. To celebrate this massive hit of nostalgia, the lead seiyuus of K-On! staged an emotional reunion during the recent AnimeJapan 2026 event, leaving half the internet with a lump in their throats.

A panel with a taste of after-school tea

The magical reunion took place on the TBS stage at Tokyo Big Sight, where Aki Toyosaki (the voice of the ever-clueless guitarist Yui Hirasawa) and Yoko Hikasa (the shy bassist Mio Akiyama) shared the microphone once again. The venue was packed with old-school fans and new generations alike. Between laughs and a few stray tears, the actresses confessed that time has flown by, claiming that the constant love from the public made them feel as if they were trapped in an eternal and happy youth.

During the talk, both recalled the episodes that most defined their careers. Toyosaki chose the school festival from the second season, focusing on that deeply melancholic scene where the girls are left alone in the clubroom after giving it their all on stage. For her part, Hikasa made the auditorium erupt in laughter when she chose the first season's festival, as the giant screen displayed the famous blue and white rice bowl scene; a visual gag that any veteran fan of the character knows perfectly well.

The untouchable legacy of Kyoto Animation

It is incredible to think that the story of the light music club remains so relevant in our hearts. The magic and care that Kyoto Animation poured into the adventures of the band Houkago Tea Time completely defined the golden era of slice of life. They taught us that you don't need epic battles to captivate the viewer; sometimes an afternoon of rehearsals and genuine friendships is everything that is right with the world. Seeing the original voices get emotional while recognizing vintage merchandise from 17 years ago among the audience confirms that the love for the franchise remains intact.

What is your favorite song by the band, or what memories does seeing these legends together again bring back for you?
