The Japanese woke up choosing violence and decided that democracy is a joke. The third character popularity poll for Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End (Sousou no Frieren) has just revealed its results after accumulating a brutal 12.7 million votes, and the final list is so absurdly great that it looks like an internet shitpost.

The massive trolling of Himmel and Frieren

To the surprise of absolutely no one who knows how Japanese otakus roll when it's time to vote, the crown didn't go to the elf protagonist nor the perfect hero. First place was taken by Genau with nearly 1.4 million votes. The guy who didn't even manage to break into the Top 30 in the last poll has just stolen the triple championship from Himmel, who had to settle for second place while tasting defeat.

And if you thought that was weird, meme power did its thing: Aura the Guillotine held onto third place. Apparently, the constant bullying on social media and the fanarts forcing her to work in fast-food joints earned her the public's sympathy. All of this left our beloved Frieren relegated to fourth place in her own manga, being outmatched in popularity by a side character, a dead hero, and a villainess who didn't even last three chapters alive.

A skeleton and a random demon in the Top 10

Since the rules of our format dictate that official rankings can include lists, here is the Oricon Top 10 so you can see that the Japanese show no mercy:

  • 1. Genau – 1,396,535 votes
  • 2. Himmel – 1,327,500 votes
  • 3. Aura – 1,020,761 votes
  • 4. Frieren – 836,891 votes
  • 5. Macht – 811,841 votes
  • 6. Serie – 707,902 votes
  • 7. Stark – 366,486 votes
  • 8. Fern – 366,486 votes
  • 9. Demon that attacks the Rufen region 2 – 365,049 votes
  • 10. Purchased Skeleton – 339,302 votes

It's pure copium for romance fans to see that Stark and Fern ended up magically tied with the exact same number of votes in seventh and eighth place, but the truly hilarious part starts at the bottom. A generic demon and a literal prop skeleton managed to break into the Top 10, leaving out heavy hitters like Übel, Denken, and Sein.

About Sousou no Frieren

For the clueless living under a rock, this is the fantasy gem that revolutionized the genre by showing us what happens after the Demon King is defeated. It is a melancholic story about the passage of time and human connections. Ironically, while its plot can make you cry oceans, its community has one of the most broken and based senses of humor on the internet.

Knowing that a prop skeleton beat almost the entire main cast in votes, do you think the Japanese have super based tastes or did they simply organize to launch the greatest funa against logic in the history of polls?
