If we ever needed proof that anime characters will go to absurd lengths for a decent meal, Shibou Yuugi de Meshi wo Kuu. (Playing Death Games to Put Food on the Table) is the show that keeps delivering. The series just dropped a fresh promotional video dubbed the "Golden Bath" version, along with the reveal of two new supporting cast members. Because apparently, surviving deadly games wasn't dramatic enough without a bath involved.

Two New Voices Enter the Death Game Arena

The anime's official website confirmed that voice actresses Haruka Oribe, known for her work in Tensei Akujo no Kuro Rekishi, and Sumire Morohoshi, beloved for her role in Violet Evergarden, are joining the cast. Oribe will voice Azuma, while Morohoshi takes on the role of Riko. It's a pairing that brings both fresh energy and proven talent to a series that's already building a solid roster.

We don't know yet exactly how deep Azuma and Riko will wade into the show's deadly waters, but with voice talent of this caliber, we're expecting them to leave a mark. Think of it as adding two new chess pieces to an already chaotic board — except the board is on fire and everyone is hungry.

A Premiere That Didn't Mess Around

For those who haven't been following along, Shibou Yuugi de Meshi wo Kuu. launched with a 60-minute premiere special on Tokyo MX back on January 7, with subsequent broadcasts on ABC TV and WOWOW. From episode two onward, the series settled into its regular 11:30 p.m. time slot and became available for streaming on Netflix and other platforms in Japan.

Starting with a double-length episode is a bold move — like showing up to a potluck with a five-course meal instead of a bag of chips. It signals confidence, and so far, the series seems to be backing it up.

The Creative Team Behind the Madness

The production is in capable hands at Studio Deen, with director Souta Ueno (Gimai Seikatsu) at the helm. Rintarou Ikeda (Kimi wa Houkago Insomnia) is managing series composition, which means the narrative pacing is being handled by someone who understands how to keep audiences glued to their screens.

On the visual side, character designs come from Eri Osada (Sekai Saikou no Ansatsusha, Isekai Kizoku ni Tensei suru), while Junichi Matsumoto (Mahoutsukai no Yome) is composing the music. If you've heard Matsumoto's previous work, you know the soundtrack alone is worth tuning in for. It's like hiring a Michelin-star chef for the background seasoning — everything just tastes better.

From Light Novel to Multi-Media Franchise

The original action suspense light novel by Yuushi Ukai, illustrated by Necometal, began publication under the MF Bunko J imprint in November 2022. The series has been prolific, to say the least — nine volumes have been published as of January 23, meaning there's no shortage of source material for the anime to draw from.

A manga adaptation by Banzai Kotobuki Daienkai started serialization in Monthly Comp Ace in April 2023, and it already has five volumes on shelves. That's two different formats telling the same story of people risking their lives for dinner. We've all had bad days at work, but this takes "earning your meal" to a whole new level.

English Release Status

For English-speaking fans, Yen Press licensed the light novel back in July 2023. The fourth volume hit shelves in August 2025, and the fifth volume is scheduled for release on February 10. So if you prefer reading your death games instead of watching them — or if you're the type who likes to smugly say "the book was better" — now's your chance to catch up.

Why We Should Be Paying Attention

Between a stacked creative team, a growing source material library, and now an expanding cast of talented voice actors, Shibou Yuugi de Meshi wo Kuu. is shaping up to be one of the Winter 2026 anime season's most intriguing offerings. The premise alone — survival death games where the stakes are literally putting food on the table — is the kind of darkly comedic metaphor for modern life that we didn't know we needed.

Check out the "Golden Bath" promotional video if you haven't already, and keep an eye on this series as it continues to expand its world and cast. Whether you're watching, reading, or both, this is one death game buffet we recommend not skipping.
