Prison for watching anime? China dismantles major otaku forum
The Chinese government arrested dozens of young otakus for sharing memes and discussing anime.

We thought the greatest danger of being an anime fan was having your favorite series canceled, but the situation has just reached a truly terrifying level. Chinese government authorities dismantled a massive online community and arrested dozens of young people, accusing them of crimes as serious as attempting to subvert state power. And all of this for the simple act of talking about anime girls and sharing Japanese content.
Forums, memes, and alleged "foreign forces"
The epicenter of this madness was the Fan'er Community, a group hosted on the Baidu platform that had nearly 800,000 members. On paper, it was a harmless corner of internet forums where users uploaded clips, discussed episodes, and hung out with memes. However, officials in Zhejiang province didn't see it that way. For them, the inside jokes and conversations about Japanese culture were clear evidence that the otaku community was colluding with foreign forces to provoke internal conflicts.
The censorship didn't stop at just closing the page. It is reported that more than 200 young people, including minors, were taken in for interrogation under conditions of extreme pressure and physical abuse to force confessions. From this group, at least a dozen are already facing prison with formal arrests, while families receive direct threats not to speak about the matter publicly.

A brutal blow to fandom freedom
All of this persecution came to light thanks to the work of journalist Terence Shen, who leaked the arrest documents and exposed how the government is monitoring its citizens even if they are abroad. Seeing young people facing charges of subversion for consuming entertainment has left the entire internet's blood running cold, proving that the line between a hobby and alleged national danger is dangerously thin in those parts.
Can you imagine ending up behind bars and being interrogated just for the memes you share in your anime groups?
