The end of a visually stunning trilogy

This film represents the conclusion of a project that kicked off in 2024 with Phantom in the Rain and continued this year with The Ashes of Rage. Under the general direction of Kenji Nakamura, who has been at the helm of the franchise since its inception, this installment seeks to delve deeper into the roots of evil inhabiting the Ooku. The original 2007 series was already known for its art style inspired by traditional Japanese art and its dense narrative, something that Mononoke the Movie: Snake God elevates to the highest level with Tomoaki Koshida's direction and top-tier technical production.

What horror lurks in the depths of the Ooku?

The story takes us back to the inner palace, the Ooku, where the atmosphere is far from peaceful following previous incidents. Empress Sachiko gives birth to an heir but tragically dies shortly after. Her resentment accumulated over years of sacrifice transforms into a malevolent presence that shakes the palace with unnatural earthquakes. Soon, a giant creature with triangular scales begins to slaughter the servants, revealing itself as the fearsome Snake God.

The Medicine Seller enters the scene to contain the monster with his talismans, but the challenge is greater than ever. To unsheathe his demon-slaying sword, he must uncover the Form, the Truth, and the Reason of this mononoke, whose existence dates back to events from 150 years ago. This time, the mysterious traveler will find himself cornered by a force that feeds on the nation's darkest history.

With the fate of the Ooku at stake and an entity that seems to surpass the protagonist's power, do you think the Medicine Seller will manage to find the Snake God's Reason before the palace is completely consumed by hatred?
